Meet the Kalibrate team: Nick Ary, Retail Network Planning Consultant

“My philosophy is ‘do the right thing, even if it’s hard’. I feel strongly about upholding the integrity of our reports and I demand the same from my co-workers so that we are always providing the best analysis to our clients.”

At Kalibrate, we believe our success is driven as much by our people as our technology. So, as part of our new meet the team series, we’re showcasing some of the talent and expertise within the Kalibrate family. This installment features Nick Ary, Retail Network Planning Consultant for Kalibrate’s Single Site Analysis Reports.

What is your role at Kalibrate?

I work within Kalibrate’s Single Site Analysis team. I help fuel retailers across the US to determine the feasibility of new gas stations in certain locations. Speaking directly with the clients, I collect as much data as possible about their potential new site in order to provide them with fuel volume projections and potential performance in comparison to their local competition.

The data I provide empowers clients to make the best decisions for their businesses. It’s always client led, so we do things the way they want to as it’s ultimately their decision, although I’ll often draw on my experience at Kalibrate to offer advice and suggestions when needed.

My philosophy is ‘do the right thing, even if it’s hard’. I feel strongly about upholding the integrity of our reports and I demand the same from my co-workers so that we are always providing the best analysis to our clients.

What does a typical day look like?

I work on a different analysis everyday, so no two days are the same.

I spend time on the phone with fuel retailers, speaking to them about their plans for new gas station. There are 50 different characteristics that we work through, so I get a full understanding of the type of site their planning. We then discuss all of the different options to determine the ‘what if’ scenarios that we want to run.

My role is to then take all the information I have garnered from our discussion and populate our Kalibrate model to produce a full Single Site Analysis report. The final analysis will provide data driven answers to all of the questions on the checklist so our clients have a really clear actionable data that they can use to inform their business plan.

You can take a look at the sort of information you get in the final gas station analysis by requesting a sample report.

What do you love about your role?

I am a people person. I love that I get to speak to clients on a daily basis, and over the years I’ve built up some strong relationships with repeat clients that have come to rely on our gas station feasibility studies. I’m proud that the work I do is dependable enough that clients repeatedly return for surveys on new sites and often recommend us to others in the industry.

I like to work with people to create dependable plans and help them make good decisions.

Why did you choose to join Kalibrate?

I used to be a golf professional and taught lessons all day at a country club. When I left that profession, I was looking for something completely new and Kalibrate was the answer.

I had been to Business School and this had given me some really useful knowledge that meant that I was quickly able to excel and grow with the company to become a Retail Network Planning Consultant for Single Sites.

What do you think are the greatest challenges and opportunities in the fuel retail sector?

I can see the rise of electric vehicles being a challenge in the fuel industry. But it’s not anything that we can’t overcome.

Our clients will eventually need to change their strategies to align to changing consumer needs. We can see that quick serve restaurants and c-stores are getting bigger and including ample sitting room to ready themselves for these changes.

We’ve seen an increase in demand for Single Site Analysis reports since the lockdown restrictions lifted proving that there are still big opportunities in the fuel retail sector. Our Single Site Analysis helps fuel retailers to understand their opportunity and potential so they can make the best decisions for their businesses.

We’re continuing to develop our underlying technology. The latest offering from Kalibrate, Planning 3.0, will provide us with additional data to further improve our reports and offer an even better service to our clients.
