Gasoline

September retail gasoline prices fell 6.6 cpl to 150.1

By the end of September, Canada’s average retail gasoline price fell to its lowest level since early February – a seven-month low.

September marks the end of the busy summer driving season, leading to lower gasoline demand, rising stocks, and falling prices. In addition, crude oil prices fell to their lowest level of the year in September as markets turned bearish upon weakening global economic indicators, contributing to lower gasoline prices. Gasoline prices fell in most regions of the country, with the most significant decline occurring in Sarnia, Ontario, where prices fell 16.4 cents per litre to 135.7 by the month’s end. In contrast, gasoline prices increased the most in Edmonton, Alberta, rising 6.4 cents per litre in September to end the month at 147.1. Overall, retail gasoline prices ended September the lowest in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 127.7 cents per litre, and finished the month the most expensive in Whitehorse, Yukon, at 184.9 cents per litre.

Diesel

September retail diesel prices fell 4 cpl to 159.4

Like retail gasoline prices, retail diesel prices also fell in September, with Canada’s average retail diesel price falling to its lowest point this year by mid-September. By the month’s end, retail diesel prices in Canada were 4.0 cents per litre lower than at the end of August. An increase in seasonal demand for diesel fuel as the fall harvest begins likely contributed to a softer decline than gasoline prices, particularly as North American diesel stocks declined in September.

In September, retail diesel prices declined in all markets, with the most significant decline occurring in Val d’Or, Québec, where prices fell 12.3 cents per litre to 159.9 by month’s end. Retail diesel prices in Canada ended September the lowest in Sarnia, Ontario, at 142.1 cents per litre and the highest in Whitehorse, Yukon, at 189.9 cents per litre.
