Kalibrate Canada: 2023 year end data available now

Since crashing in 2020, retail sales at Canadian gas stations have continuously improved yet remain below pre-pandemic levels.

Gasoline sales in Canada have struggled to reach pre-pandemic levels. Kalibrate Canada retail fuel volume data, representing roughly 75% of retail sales in Canada, shows retail gasoline sales have steadily increased since the pandemic but were still 6.4% lower in  2023 than in 2019. Several factors have contributed to sustained lower gasoline sales, including a larger portion of the gasoline fleet having greater fuel efficiency as older, less fuel-efficient vehicles are removed, a greater proportion of electric cars in the passenger vehicle fleet, and continued work-from-home trends. A recent study released by Statistics Canada shows that as of November 2023, 20 percent of Canadians worked from home, compared to fewer than 10 percent before the pandemic.

Although retail diesel fuel sales at Canadian gas stations fell during the pandemic, and were quicker to recover, Kalibrate Canada data shows diesel fuel sales have fallen during the last two years and were 9.3% lower in 2023 compared to 2019. Diesel sales are heavily correlated with economic health. A strong economy leads to greater diesel fuel demand from the manufacturing, industrial and agricultural sectors. Constrictive monetary policies implemented to reduce inflation have likely contributed to reduced diesel fuel demand in Canada.
