June 2023 Canadian Petroleum Price Snapshot
Gasoline
The average Canadian retail unleaded price ended the month 6.4 cents per litre lower than the end of May. Except for British Columbia, where retail unleaded prices rose a modest 0.9 cents per litre, all provinces experienced a decline in retail unleaded prices, the largest drop occurring in Nova Scotia at 7.5 cents per litre. Despite stronger year-over-year gasoline demand, North American gasoline inventories rose this past month, with the largest increase occurring along the East Coast according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly petroleum report, and is likely the main contributing factor to lower retail unleaded prices in Canada, particularly in central and eastern provinces.
Retail gasoline prices fell 6.4cpl to 161.7 in June.
Diesel
Retail diesel prices changed little over June, ending the month just 0.5 cents per litre lower than the end of May. Most provinces experienced a decline in retail diesel prices in June, the largest drop in prices occurring in the Prairie Provinces, at 5.0 cents per litre. In contrast, Quebec experienced an increase in retail diesel prices, rising 5.7 cents per litre in June. Since the end of last year, retail diesel prices have fallen 52.1 cents per litre in Canada. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly petroleum report shows distillate stocks rose in June, while demand tracked lower – both factors contributing to lower North American diesel fuel prices.
