April 2023 Canadian Petroleum Price Snapshot

We conduct a daily survey of retail gasoline, diesel, propane, and furnace fuel prices in 77 Canadian cities. Petroleum prices are available for download and display using a variety of analytic tools on our website.

Gasoline

The average Canadian retail unleaded price ended the month at 162.0 cents per litre, 7.5 cents per litre higher than the end of March. All regions in Canada experienced an increase in retail gasoline prices, with the most significant increase occurring in Ontario as prices rose over ten cents per litre. Although the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly petroleum report shows North American gasoline demand declined 7.3 percent over April, gasoline stocks are below the previous five-year average range heading into the busy summer driving season, leading to rising retail prices.

Retail gasoline prices rose 7.5cpl to 162.0 in April.

Diesel

Retail diesel fuel prices in Canada continued to decline in April. Since the start of the year, Canadian retail diesel prices have fallen 47.5 cents per litre, reaching 158.2 cents per litre by the end of April. In April, the most significant decline was experienced in Atlantic Canada, falling over 24 cents per litre, followed by Quebec, which saw the average retail diesel price fall over 13 cents per litre. Distillate North American demand declined 8.7 percent from the end of March (as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly petroleum report). Additionally, distillate stocks were within the previous five-year average range in April after spending most of the previous year below normal levels. Both factors contributed to lower diesel fuel prices in Canada in April.

Retail diesel prices fell 5.8cpl to 158.2 in April.
