NACS Show 2026: Growth isn’t guaranteed.

If there was one message repeated throughout NACS Show 2026, it was this: Growth is becoming harder to find.

In the State of the Industry Updates session, host Chris Rapanick pointed to declining transaction counts, falling fuel volumes, rising operating costs, and increasing pressure on convenience retail profitability.

Those statistics are concerning, yet the atmosphere across NACS was remarkably positive. The industry’s leading retailers aren’t waiting for market conditions to improve. They’re adapting.

Doing more with every customer visit

One of the strongest themes emerging from this year’s event was the importance of maximizing every customer interaction.

With transaction counts declining, more traffic doesn’t signal success. Convenience retailers need to generate more value from every visit.

Retailers discussed strategies including:

  • Better merchandising
  • Personalized promotions
  • Loyalty optimization
  • Improved foodservice performance

Quick-service restaurants have already demonstrated how targeted upselling can increase basket size and improve profitability. Many convenience retailers are now exploring how similar approaches can enhance the customer experience while driving stronger results.

Efficiency becomes a growth strategy

Historically, retailers once viewed efficiency initiatives as cost-saving projects, today they’re becoming growth strategies.

When margins are under pressure and customer behavior is changing, operational efficiency creates flexibility. It allows retailers to reinvest, adapt more quickly, and make better-informed decisions.

Turning trusted data into practical action

Retailers already have more data than ever, and confidence in that data is growing. The challenge now is deciding what to do with it.

At NACS Show 2026, the most useful conversations about AI and technology focused on practical applications available today. Retailers are using trusted data to refine long-term strategy, but also to make faster tactical decisions when pressure is high. Adjusting promotions, improving category performance, prioritizing investment and responding to local demand.

The conversation around AI, and technology in general, has matured. The question is no longer whether retailers should use it, but where it can deliver useful, measurable results today.

The value lies in helping people act with greater speed and confidence, not in adopting technology for its own sake.

In this interview live from NACS Show 2026, Simon Martin, Kalibrate’s SVP Global Fuel and Mobility Retail states it clearly: “More data is not always better… The objective should be to generate confidence and clarity, not confusion.”

Technology is not the destination; it is an enabler of better decisions.

A reason for optimism

Yes, the industry faces meaningful challenges: transaction counts are down, fuel volumes are under pressure, and the breakeven point for many retailers continues to rise.

But NACS 2026 also highlighted something reassuring: Retailers remain resilient.

They continue to innovate, invest, test new ideas, and look for smarter ways to improve performance.

The most successful organizations aren’t relying on market growth alone. They’re building stronger businesses through better data, better decisions, and a relentless focus on optimization.

That’s ultimately what made this year’s NACS feel so positive. The numbers may be challenging, but the industry’s response is not.
