Gasoline:

Retail gasoline prices declined 3.3 cents per litre to 140.9 in October

In October, gasoline prices in Canada fell 3.3 cents per litre, ending the month at 140.9. Declining crude oil prices and contracting gasoline refining margins allowed retail gasoline prices in Canada to reach their lowest price of the year in mid-October. Ongoing concerns about a potential crude oil glut emerging were the primary reason crude oil prices declined in October. Additionally, lower seasonal demand and the switch to winter-blended gasoline led to narrower gasoline refining margins. Compared to a year ago, gasoline prices were 11.3 cents per litre lower at the end of October, primarily due to lower petroleum taxes resulting from the removal of carbon taxes earlier this year, as well as lower crude oil prices.

Most Canadian markets experienced declining gasoline prices in October, with the largest decline observed in North Bay, Ontario, where prices fell 15.7 cents per litre to end October at 116.4 cents per litre, the lowest price in Canada at month’s end. While most markets experienced price decreases, some saw prices rise. The biggest increase occurred in Kelowna, British Columbia, where gasoline prices climbed 6.0 cents per litre in October, ending the month at 146.3. Overall, by the end of October, the highest gasoline prices in Canada were observed in Victoria, British Columbia, at 162.3 cents per litre.

Diesel:

Retail diesel prices increased 4.4 cents per litre to 157.5 in October

Unlike gasoline prices, retail diesel prices in Canada increased throughout October, reaching their highest levels by month’s end since the removal of carbon taxes in April. Overall, prices rose by an average of 4.4 cents per litre in Canada in October; however, there was some regional variation. Diesel prices in Atlantic Canada rose well above the national average, ranging from 6.3 cents per litre in Prince Edward Island to as much as 20.1 cents per litre in Newfoundland. Atlantic Canada uses home heating fuel more predominantly than other parts of the country, a fuel similar in composition to diesel fuel, and as such, experiences more seasonal fluctuations in diesel prices compared to other parts of the country.

The largest price increase occurred in Gander, Newfoundland, where prices rose 23.2 cents per litre in October, ending the month at 177.9. Some markets experienced declining prices in October, with the biggest decline observed in Lethbridge, Alberta, at 3.0 cents per litre, ending the month at 143.9. Overall, by the end of October, the highest price in Canada was found in Labrador City, Newfoundland, at 190.2 cents per litre, while the lowest was in Hamilton, Ontario, at 136.2 cents per litre
