Gasoline

Retail gasoline prices fell 20.2 cents per litre to 143.7 in April

Retail gasoline prices in Canada saw significant declines in April, dropping 20.2 cents per litre from the end of March.

The most notable decrease happened on April 1st, when the carbon tax was removed in most provinces. Quebec was the only province without a carbon tax, as it has a Cap & Trade Program with California. Prices continued to fall in April, reaching as low as 137.0 cents per litre by mid-month— the lowest price since August 2021— as crude oil prices sharply decreased following Liberation Day tariff announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump. A trade war could potentially lead to reduced economic activity and, consequently, lower crude oil demand. Additionally, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and Allies (OPEC+) is expected to increase crude oil production, further contributing to rising supplies and decreasing prices. However, retail gasoline prices rose during the second half of April as the gasoline crack spread widened due to declining North American gasoline stocks, as rising demand was countered by limited production from lower refinery utilization.

The largest decrease in gasoline prices in Canada was observed in North Bay, Ontario, where retail prices fell by 31.9 cents per litre over the month, ending April at 123.5. In contrast, retail gasoline prices rose in several Quebec markets, with the largest increase occurring in Chicoutimi, Quebec, where prices climbed 5.0 cents per litre during April to end the month at 142.4. Retail gasoline prices in Canada finished April at the lowest in Brandon, Manitoba, at 116.2 cents per litre, and the highest in Vancouver, British Columbia, at 166.0 cents per litre.

Diesel

Retail diesel prices fell 26.6 cents per litre to 145.3 in April

Canadian retail diesel prices declined a remarkable 26.6 cents per litre in April, ending the month at 145.3 cents per litre. Similar to gasoline prices, retail diesel prices in Canada experienced significant declines in April due to the removal of the carbon tax and falling crude oil prices. By mid-April, retail diesel prices had dropped to 144.6 cents per litre, marking the lowest level in Canada since December 2021. April saw some regional variation in diesel price declines, with prices in Atlantic Canada decreasing by over 40 cents per litre on average, while Quebec experienced a more modest decline of an average of seven cents per litre. The eastern part of Canada experiences greater seasonal variation in diesel prices due to the region’s use of home heating fuel, which is a similar product to diesel fuel.

All markets surveyed in Canada experienced a decline in diesel prices in April. The most significant decrease in diesel prices was observed in Gander, Newfoundland, where prices fell by 47.2 cents per litre, ending the month at 147.9. In contrast, the smallest decline occurred in Val D’Or, Quebec, where prices dropped by 4.0 cents per litre in April, ending the month at 175.9, the highest price in Canada. Overall, at the end of April, the lowest price was recorded in Sarnia, Ontario, at 123.5 cents per litre.
