Lockdown measures implemented to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus significantly reduced the demand for transportation fuels in the spring of 2020. Since then, fuel sales in Canada have struggled to reach pre-pandemic levels. Kalibrate Canada retail fuel volume data, representing roughly 75 percent of retail sales in Canada, shows retail gasoline sales in the second quarter of 2023 were 5.8 percent lower than in the same quarter in 2019. Many Canadians continue to work from home following the pandemic, while others may have shifted to cleaner fuel alternatives, such as electric vehicles.
